This black walnut heart dyed fabric started with a bucket of walnuts given to me in November. I soaked the walnuts with their husks in a bucket for a few days, strained out the liquid and put it into glass quart jars with a 1/4 cup of vinegar in each jar to preserve the liquid. Then put it in the refrigerator until I figured out what to do with it.
When I had some time to experiment I poured some of the walnut liquid into a blender with agar agar and mixed until smooth. Then I poured it into a pot on the stove and stirred while it heated. Poured it into jars and when it cooled it was like jello. Way to much agar agar. When I was ready to make this project I took some of the dye from the jar, added water and reheated on stove to make the consistency in the picture above.
Then I dipped the heart cookie cutter into the gel like mixture and stamped it onto the thin white cotton fabric. I put too much dye on cutter in the picture above so it bled somewhat but I kind of like how it looks. The heart in this picture is still wet.
I stamped the hearts approximately 3 inches apart. Next time I would put them a little closer.
After the dye dried on the fabric I ironed it and then a few days later washed it in the machine with a earth-friendly detergent. This is what the finished fabric looked like. The hearts did not fade.
Now that the fabric was printed I had no idea what to do with it. Made these Valentine cards......any other suggestions?
